Yet, while folktales from various cultures around the world have been widely documented and made accessible to global audiences, Papuan folktales remain largely unknown beyond their immediate communities. It is this gap that the present anthology seeks to bridge. This collection gathers folktales from different tribes across Papua, offering a glimpse into the mythologies, moral lessons, and imaginative landscapes that have shaped Papuan cultural consciousness for centuries. These stories, passed down through generations in the form of oral traditions, reflect the deep connection between Papuans and their natural surroundings, as well as their philosophies on life, community, and the supernatural. By bringing these tales into English, we hope to share them with a wider audience, inviting readers from around the world to appreciate the depth and richness of Papuan storytelling.
