SINOPSIS:
More than a skill, understanding spoken English has become an essential requirement for success in today's world. Whether it's at an international business meeting, a university lecture or just chatting with friends in the street, you need to listen. First of all, when someone else is talking, it can be challenging for people who have studied English as a second language (ESL) to convey their thoughts in return. Many ESL learners find listening the most difficult skill to acquire (Floriasti & Sudiyono, 2022). In addition to grasping sound symbols in the first place, comprehension demands processing and memory functions, which are all highly taxing on cognitive components. Getting used to hearing native English pronunciation, authentic materials, and known-to-be successful listening exercises in a variety of situations is usually absent from EFL learners' learning experience (Floriasti & Sudiyono, 2022). Such absence may subsequently lead them to misunderstand what they have heard. Secondly, with the advent of language learning software and online education, educational organizations in England, such as the British Council, are well aware of this problem. The advances made by these institutions in multimedia production and designing new listening teaching materials would, in turn, reduce their students' listening problems (Floriasti & Destyana, 2023). To sum up, this essay argues that the British Council plays a crucial part in raising English listening levels by providing excellent digital content, offering practical language exposure experience and promoting expert teaching through its international cooperation in education.
