The writing of this book is inspired by the growing awareness of the need for a reference book on reading in English in the Indonesian context. The need has been reiterated by graduate and undergraduate students conducting research related to reading for the purpose of thesis writing. There have been references available but they are mostly based on reading in the first or second language. Grabe’s (2009) observation has also confirmed that publication on reading is mostly based on research in English as the first language. There have been many reading textbooks written in the Indonesian context but little has been known about reading reference books in the Indonesian context. Despite similarities in general characteristics of reading in different languages, Sugirin (1997, 2002, 2013) notes differences in several aspects such as the essence of reading, reading strategy use, attitudes towards reading, reading habits, etc. This, for instance, can be seen from Sugirin’s introduction of three different meanings of reading (micro, general, and macro) in the Indonesian context. Another phenomenon is related to people’s attitude indicating that reading ability may not always be in line with its implementation in life. Violating traffic signs does not mean that the road users are unable to read or understand the traffic signs. They comprehend but do not understand the meaning of the signs. In Friedman’s (2019) words, they have understood the author’s goal of writing the signs but not the reader’s goal of reading them.
